Set in a stunning castle, the Turquoise Museum is located in Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico. It’s worth taking the trip if you’d like to discover even more about the beautiful gem. Their collection of Turquoise explores the rich history that spans centuries. Discover the different mines, specimens and stories surrounding the exquisite gem. It’s been an impressive place where many come as part of their research for their book, articles or papers.

The First and Second Generation

The Turquoise Museum has been within the family for generations and continues to do so. It all starts with Jesse Zachary Sr. who managed the Villa Grove Turquoise Mine in Colorado. Upon moving back to New Mexico he traded began trading in Turquoise and jewellery. J.C. “Zack” Zachary Jr. spent his childhood learning all about Turquoise from his father, which led to a great passion for the sky blue gems. So much so that he managed to acquire the largest collection of high grade American turquoise mines across the globe. The Turquoise Museum proudly features many pieces from Zack’s and his wife Lilian’s personal collection. Impressively, he traveled far and wide to find the most finest Turquoise, even to Europe and Iran. You can only imagine how incredible his collection is including pieces from over 100 mines and 6 continents. Also, the reason why many archaeologists, scientists and writers would turn to him.

The Third Generation

Zack’s son Bob also became fascinated with Turquoise and jewellery making - no surprise there, being surrounded with the buzz of the family business. He became his father’s partner with the company going from strength to strength selling Turquoise jewellery all over the world. Teaching himself how to make and design jewellery by his early twenties, he was recognised as an award winning artist. Many of Bob’s pieces are displayed in the museum galleries.

Joe and Katy Lowry focused on educating others on Turquoise and Indian arts through delivering lectures. They were passionate about protecting this beautiful, natural gem making museum staff, gallery owners and trade show participants aware too all over the US. They also travelled to Europe sourcing beautiful Turquoise, jewellery and art. Writing many articles and serving on boards, they eventually founded the Turquoise Museum with many pieces from their collection featuring in the gallery glass cabinets for all visitors to admire.

The Forth Generation

Joe Dan grew up working for the family business learning a different skill from those before him. Zack introduced him to industry professionals, Bob showed him how to cut and shape Turquoise along with the science of the gem and his father taught him the importance of education. With all of these different skills and their amazing collections, Joe Dan has been able to build the turquoise Museum’s impressive reputation. His wife, Davonna is the museum photographer and general manager of the business.

The Fifth Generation

Their children, Danielle and Jacob have grew up with the Turquoise Museum as a huge part of their lives. They are super excited to take the family run museum to the next level in the new location. Jacob is the museum’s director and Danielle is the cafe and flower shop manager.

A Family Legacy

I think you can agree that the Turquoise Museum would be so wonderful to visit with the knowledge, experience and collection of Turquoise that has been passed down through each generation. The family have dedicated their life’s work to the education of Turquoise. Their legacy is celebrated and honoured within the walls of the museum. If you get the opportunity to visit, we’re sure it will be worthwhile. You'll be greeted by the 21,500 Turquoise beads in the breathtaking chandelier!
