Found in just a few places across the globe, Turquoise is extremely rare. There are only a small amount of deposits worldwide including Iran, Mexico, United States, Afghanistan, China and Irasel. These places host the perfect conditions for the sky blue gemstone to form, usually dry and barren. With many mines becoming depleted, they have no choice but to sadly close, making Turquoise harder to find as the years go on.
Turquoise Mines Around the World
It’s well known in the industry that the most even sky blue Turquoise is found in mines near Nishapur in Iran. For centuries, the finest, most exquisite Turquoise has come from these legendary mines and amazingly still do! However, a lot have now been depleted.
Turquoise pieces that are sourced from China, Iran, the US, Mexico, Chile and Tibet are usually enhanced to improve their colour and lustre. Making up approximately 75% of Turquoise on the market, it is not thought be the highest of quality. That being said not all that comes out of these mines are altered in the workshop, some places produce exquisite pieces. Unfortunately, enhancements are something that many have to look out for when buying the much loved stone.
What was once a bustling mining community in the American Southwest, is now much quieter due to the closure of mines. Surprisingly, the beautiful, high quality gems that come from this region have been stumbled upon when actually mining copper, just showing how exclusive Turquoise actually is.
Bisbee, Lander Blue, Number Eight and Lone Mountain are the most famous Turquoise mines in the Southwest United States. You’ll be right in thinking that there are mines located in many states across the US but Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada are by far the most common. As we mentioned many are all mined out except for Nevada and a couple in Arizona. The perfect arid conditions and copper rich areas make these the ideal spots to source high quality Turquoise, which is exactly where we get ours from.
